Finding the extraordinary in familiar natural forms.

Steve Foster is a contemporary British floral painter based in Wiltshire. Working in oils, he creates closely observed paintings in which scale, colour, light and shadow reveal the physical and emotional presence of natural forms.

His work is particularly concerned with flowers and the brief period in which they reach their fullest expression. Their shapes, folds and changing surfaces offer an almost limitless field of visual discovery. By isolating and enlarging these forms, Steve encourages the viewer to notice details that might otherwise pass unseen.

Light is central to his practice. Highlights, reflections and deep shadows give the paintings their sculptural quality, while layered colour creates a sense of luminosity and depth. The resulting works occupy a space between close botanical observation and heightened realism.

Underlying the visual richness is an awareness of time. A flower cannot remain at its peak, and its beauty is inseparable from its transience. Steve’s paintings hold a particular moment while also reflecting on fragility, change and the value of paying attention.

Steve works from his studio in Wiltshire. His paintings have been exhibited in galleries and curated exhibitions in the United Kingdom and are held in private collections in the UK and internationally.
